Sorry, but the DoJ is paying the price for their abuse of due process. Apple and Google are simply responding to the will of the people to do what’s right; better than the executive branch in this case. I’d be very surprised if they could get the legislation they want introduced, much less passed in this political climate. This is what happens when you betray the public trust.
Oh, one more thought… there is not a balancing act, here. The Constitution is pretty clear about due process and the need for a warrant. You want to search someone’s phone? Fine, show cause and get a warrant. If the suspect refuses to comply, then you have the ability to jail them. It may not be convenient, but liberty is not a convenient philosophy.
