A lot, actually! Progressives are becoming more and more shrill. That’s a good sign. It means they are in trouble. I’m hoping current events have been getting conservatives fired up. The thing is, you can’t just get fired up. Actions have to be put to the words for it to mean anything. Even if you don’t have much money (I don’t and this Republican party wouldn’t get a dime from me, regardless), there’s still a lot you can do.
The first and most important is to speak up. You can blog it, whether on a dedicated web site or on social media. You need to be writing your government representatives and get your opinion heard. Writing the editors of newspapers are a joke today, but the comments of the online sites does have an impact. Ironically, that impact is that the editors often turn off the comments to silence opposition. You can’t be afraid to give your honest opinion when your Leftist neighbor asks what you think. The catch is, make sure you have Reason behind your belief. You won’t change their mind, but you will have a lot of influence on others listening.
Organizational activity is another way. For me, that is through Reasonable Faith which is a Christian apologetics organization. It lets me have an influence in what goes into kids’ minds, which is the most important front of the war. It also refines my use of formal logic and debate.
Being a Boy Scout Asst. Scoutmaster is another way I’m engaging. Contrary to what the mainstream media may be misrepresenting and the foolish top-down push from National, the reality is the old saying that “All Scouting is local.” It’s still a front line in the battle for the hearts and minds of the nations young men.
Just like my hours are limited and I have to spend them carefully, so too with my checkbook. In my case, that meant joining the NRA. Not only are the a strong advocate for the Second Amendment, but my whole family shoots and I’m able to register my training which enables me to be more effective teaching Cub and Boy Scouts shooting sports. I’m not suggesting you join (though it certainly is a good idea), but that do what you can and research how the money is used before you do so.
There are other things you can do, as well. I’ve worked campaign phone banks in the past and will likely work for campaigns again. More sacrificial, we have taken the financial hit to homeschool our son and try to be active within and advocating for the homeschool community. There are lots of little things you can do, but you have to look for them or create them if you don’t see them readily.
Of everything you can do, the speaking up part is probably the most dangerous. There’s a reason Progressives make such an effort at social shaming, IRS intimidation, college speech codes and all the other bully techniques they use to shut people up. Ideas are dangerous. Reason is even more dangerous. Truth is the greatest threat of all. They know in their hearts they have none of these on their side, so they will do anything to keep you silent.
To correctly quote Edmund Burke:
When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.
If people cannot find the courage to join together and act, then it is lost because there will be nobody to oppose evil.
